dissed by sarah palin and watching her ratings tumble all year, oprah winfrey goes on the defensive. by admitting she’s 200 pounds. what does this bring her? sympathy. american women love to stand around the water cooler and moan about their thighs and hips and this bulge and that bulge. so maybe oprah is trying to re-cement this bond.

in may, the los angeles times reported that oprah winfrey’s ratings and magazine circulation have dropped. yesterday, it was announced that ms. winfrey would end her syndication run in 2011 (when her contract with king world runs out).

oprah’s political partisanship has undoubtedly damaged her ratings. maybe king world isn’t interested in extending her contract. are advertisers pulling out? the orpah people are spinning this saying, she’s always planned to put her show on a new cable network she’s developing. sounds like nothing less than spin.

according to the new york times, oprah winfrey’s ratings have fallen 7% thus far in 2008 and her magazine, O, has seen it’s circulation decline by 10%. these numbers are from spring. but worth taking a look at since king world’s announcement.

should this be a headline? according to the drudgereport, oprah winfrey, queen of feel-good, trash tv apparently is balking at putting sarah palin on her show. did she let hillary clinton on her show during the primaries. can’t remember. but initially hill didn’t really do a whole lot of press. well maybe sarah will have to hit up jerry springer. but the best strategy might be an instant E! True Political story, if they every decide to go down that alley.

chuck and oprah making a difference?

i’m not sure how i feel about celebrities endorsing politicians. back in 2004, i believe it was joe pantaloni who showed up on the doorstep of some ohioian in thousand dollar tennis shoes, begging the family to support john kerry. this year, there’s the big ‘o’ as in oprah winfrey who is fully supporting barack obama. and then there’s the big ‘norris’ as in chuck norris of of walking tall fame, supporting mike huckabee. the chuck norris facts website is getting a lot of traffic at the moment. number 1 fact on the site, ‘guns don’t kill people, chuck norris does.’ apparently a norris favorite is ‘chuck norris gave mona lisa that smile.’

according to this article on the new york times website, the oprah demograhic is: 75 percent women. More than 50% of her 8.6M viewers are over 50, while 44 percent make less than $40,000 a year. About 25 percent have no more than a high school diploma.
