dunkirk part deux

Thursday, September 7th, 2017

just when you were sick and tired of seeing the same bloody actors in film after film, christopher nolan comes along and finds replacements for aging hipsters like johnny depp (see harry styles). years ago a friend went into great detail as to why she hated saving private ryan. number one, the germans were pure evil, not even a tiny bit of character nuance there. number two, until the end of the film you saw one recognizable actor after another. with the except of kenneth branagh –the older statesmen in the film have recognizable faces but that’s really it. we at a blog about whatever think that we are living in the age of the auteur with a side of superhero movies.

dunkirk and the men’s movement

Thursday, September 7th, 2017

it all started in the 1990s with the book iron john. this book talked about men going into the woods (or something like) to reclaim themselves. it spawned a bit of a movement. fast forward to charlottesville and take a u-turn via dunkirk. we choose to believe that the america’s far-right’s march on charlottesville was at its heart a cry for help. we will not digress into psychoanalysis as we at a blog about whatever do not believe in psychology although we do believe that mental illness should be treated by a psychiatrist and with lots of meds. like maybe “e.” which once upon a time was legal and might be once again.

the first time i saw the dunkirk trailer i thought, wait a minute. there are no women in this movie. and yesterday while perusing youtube watching behind-the-scenes stuff, it would seem to be that minus christopher nolan’s wife slash producer, the dunkirk set was a fraulein-frei-zone. does this matter? probably not.  no more revisionism plz. there were (most likely) no women on the beach at dunkirk. but nolan did toss in a couple of red cross nurses.  ernst hemingway would’ve enjoyed this film.

so here is our recommendation for a sequel. SPOILER ALERT. since kenneth brannagh’s character mentions his staying behind to help rescue french troops, we think that would be dunkirk II. for dunkirk III we’d like to see the retelling of the original story from the point of view of the german pilots and sailors (torpedoing the british ships). for dunkirk IV maybe a prisoner of war story with tom hardy could work quite nicely.

x-files crushed by batman

Friday, August 1st, 2008

has the dark knight completely overshadowed fox mulder? or is it because david duchovny held out too long –until he had a string of losing films, before he signed onto the second x-files movie. in the end, it’s probably a bit of both. well duchovny is quite 20th century while christian bale is a 21st century kinda guy.

christopher nolan vs. james cameron

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

can christopher nolan’s ‘the dark knight’ topple james cameron’s ‘titanic?’ well, we know the score won’t. i guess the batman producers neglected to insert a bonafide pop tune into the soundtrack. might be why the film is a runaway hit.

the dark knight 155 million opening weekend

Sunday, July 20th, 2008

the biggest weekend ever, they’re saying. the opening numbers best spiderman 3 by a cool 4 million.

let’s let the brits make more films. we all know that the dark knight, the new batman film is technically a british flick. and now we know that ridley scott isn’t the only englishman who can make great fluffy movies. now we have christopher nolan. but we know he at least can make the intellectual stuff too. memento is a mini-classic.

the dark knight opened to coast-to-coast sell out shows in the u.s. on it’s first day, chris nolan’s follow up to the hugely successful batman begins raked in 60 million dollars.

more video clips from batman

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

if you can stand the buffering, you can go to the comcast website to watch some video clips from ‘the dark knight.’ but don’t get too excited. the new christopher nolan film, starring welshman turned american, christian bale, features stuff like filming in chicago and how they made the clown masks. or something like that. and you have to endure the endless buffering. aren’t you tired of hollywood being so paranoid that they won’t even allow fans to legally download a one minute video clip. instead, they force people who don’t have a highspeed connection –and even those of us who do, to watch less than quality level video.

too bad warner brothers decided not to have a worldwide opening for this films. those of you who live overseas might get so anxious that, well you, downloading is always an option innit, as michael caine might say?

the dark knight featuring harvey dent

aaron eckhart plays two-face in the new batman film, ‘the dark knight.’ a lot of the focus seems to be on the joker and the deceased heath ledger. but if you’ve forgotten about two-face, a refresher.

four new clips of the new batman film

Saturday, May 10th, 2008

the last great film i saw at the sundance film festival was ‘memento,’ directed by brit, christopher nolan. choosing him to take on the dark knight series, starting with ‘batman begins’ has been nothing less than inspiring. and along with christian bale the series, which faultered under the weight of george clooney as well as ‘fat girl and robin’, has mined the original feel of the graphic novels. yahoo to take a look at 4 different theatrical trailers for the dark night along with an interview with heath ledger. i should also mention aaron eckhart, who plays two-face. i still love him in ‘friends and neighbors’ and ‘the company of men.’
