looks like diego maradona will remain coach of the argentina national team, with of course the blessing of lionel messi.

the curse of the nike ad

Sunday, July 4th, 2010

robinho, cristiano ronaldo, drogba, ribery and wayne rooney (amongst others) all prominently appear in the much chatted about nike commercial (that currently has more than 18M views on youtube). all 4 players under performed and were sent packing early during the 2010 world cup in south africa. out of the posse, robinho played well, but cristino ronaldo and drogba only managed to score 1 goal while wayne rooney came up cold. but apparently the curse extends beyond the ‘fight the future’ nike commerical, as lionel messi failed to score one goal during this world cup. confirms that with roger federer’s ouster from wimbledon that the curse has spread and is perhaps essentially virtually complete. and since many members of spain’s national team are in this advert (minus fernando torres, we might note although he has as yet to score a goal either in the WC), this might mean that germany could be marching into the finals against either uruguay or the netherlands.

germany takes revenge on argentina for 2006

Saturday, July 3rd, 2010

in the quarter-finals of the world cup football championship, germany beat argentina 4:0. we’d say it was fitting revenge for the fight initiated by the argentina team in 2006 after germany beat argentina in a game that went beyond extra time to penalties.

what happened to italy and france?

Saturday, June 26th, 2010

as the world cup begins today with the first game in the round of 16 being played between urugay and south korea at 3pm GMT, one could ask oneself, what happend to italy and france? and what is up with the european teams?

in terms of europe, none of the teams have been playing impressively. it could have something to do with the south africa being in a higher altitude that europe and it generally taking about 2 weeks for one’s body to acclimate to these circumstances. it could be the african horns, which some players initially claimed hindered communication on the field. or it could just be that these guys make too much damn money.

brazil and argentina handily advanced, despite not playing up to a world championship level. but brazil and argentina are in the lowlands or south america, in comparison to uruguay and mexico. so this could expalin why uruguay, a world class team, has played like the world class players they are.

a much needed overhaul of the italy team, known as the azzuri. coach marcello lippi apologised profusely after italy’s 3:2 loss to slovakia this week. but this isn’t the first time the team has failed to advance. in the 2008 world cup, italy failed to make it past the first round. we suspect buffon, the best goalkeeper in the world, may not really be injured. we suspect he immediately recognized the failings of his team in the first half of italy’s first game and cried injury. but we have no proof.

lippi apologised for fielding a group of players without passion in their hearts. it didn’t help that this team, minus francesco toti (who had the foresight to retire from international play prior to the european championships), held 9 player (out of 11) over 30. and that they all make wads and wads of cash. or did. they’re just lucky they left luca toni behind this time, otherwise things would’ve been much worse. we saw what he did to bayern muenchen.
